What does it mean to be vegan?

A friendly guide for curious kids (and grown-ups too!)

Veganism is about not using animals

Veganism is a way of thinking that says: animals shouldn't be used by humans โ€” for food, clothing, entertainment, or anything else.

Animals are not ours to use.

It's not just about what you eat. It's about believing that animals deserve to live freely, without being treated as things we own.

What does "exploitation" mean?

The word veganism uses is exploitation. That's a big word! It means using someone for your own benefit โ€” even if you don't hurt them badly.

Exploitation Taking eggs from hens, even from "happy" hens โ€” because you're using them
Exploitation Riding horses for fun โ€” because you're using them for your enjoyment
Exploitation Wearing boots made from an animal's skin โ€” because you're using their body
NOT exploitation Accidentally hitting a bird with a car โ€” you weren't using them for anything

Things people get confused about

๐Ÿฅ—
Veganism is not just about who we don't eat A vegan doesn't use boots made from animal skin, zoos, or any other use of animals. Someone who only eats plants but still uses animals in other ways is plant-based, not vegan.
๐Ÿ’š
Veganism is the baseline, not a virtuous act of reducing harm Veganism is about what you believe โ€” that animals are not resources for humans to use. Incidental harm that happens in the world around us doesn't contradict that belief. The question is whether you are choosing to use animals, not whether you've earned points for reducing harm.
๐ŸŒพ
What about animals harmed when farming plants? Veganism isn't about stopping every instance of harm โ€” some harm is incidental, meaning it happens as a side effect, not a purpose. That is very different from believing animals are your property to use. Veganism opposes treating animals as things we own and use, not all incidental harm.
๐Ÿญ
Veganism is not about "nicer" farms Vegans don't think the problem is how animals are treated โ€” they think the problem is using animals at all. A very kind farm that still uses animals is still exploitation.

Freedom for animals

Veganism's goal is animal liberation โ€” the same way we believe humans shouldn't be enslaved or owned by others, vegans believe animals shouldn't be owned or used by humans either.

You wouldn't say it's okay to keep people as slaves just because the owner is kind.
Veganism says the same logic applies to animals.
